A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.
UPDATE it shipped, no communication from coinbase or dell on resolution, just "we're looking into it" but i got the shipment email and tracking # from Fedex. When i saw the Dell announcement, I was excited. My daughter needed a laptop for schoolwork, nothing fancy, so I ordered her laptop up and paid with bitcoin on 7/18. The order was placed on hold pending "Verification" according to Dell support, and I'm in an endless loop in Dell Customer Service trying to get it resolved. The Verification Department says "this isn't a credit card, we only verify credit cards." and transfers me to someone else who says "this order needs verification, you need to talk to the verification department" and transfers me back to the Verification Department who says again "this isn't a credit card, I will transfer you to someone who can assist you." repeat ad-nauseum. so right now, I'm out a good half a bitcoin currently, with an order stuck at Dell that isn't getting processed. the transaction has been verified 611 times according to the blockchain: https://blockchain.info/tx/5278b85fc7819c8a5f36df5580647add44d53e13b950c3fbf5dba89b41d4a729 Dell needs to work on their internal plumbing a bit before you can feel good about ordering with your hard-earned and carefully hoarded bitcoins.
Dell Bitcoin payment option as of 2016? Still not ready for prime time
I was very excited when I first saw Dell's announcement back in mid-2014, but my excitement dropped after I saw posts like this one or this one. I didn't see any similar posts recently, so I thought everything was fixed and I decided to give it a shot. Well, as you may guess, I was wrong. After two weeks of numerous calls to Dell Customer Service and my Bitcoins being in Dell's Coinbase wallet, my order is still stuck at Dell. I won't repeat what the posts I linked describe, so just to sum up: the situation about paying with Bitcoin on Dell is still the same. Or is there anyone whose order paid with Bitcoin was processed without any problems by Dell?
Dell's Bitcoin adoption is evidence of their core philosophy.
Maybe I nicked this statement from someone, or maybe I come up with it, but a phrase I use a lot when I talk to people about Digital Autonomous Organizations is ".. the economy and the state are engineering problems, not political ones." What struck me from the Dell announcement around Bitcoin acceptance is this is reflective of a core belief in at least a version of this philosophy. In late 2012, Michael Dell came on my show (theCUBE) to talk about the changes in the industry and at Dell, and had this to say: "When I look at the big opportunities that exist in the world and the big unsolved problems, be they in medicine, in education, in energy or the environment, I think that these are problems that technology will solve." "I think about the innovation that's occurred over the last couple decades that I've been in this industry where IT used to be this sort of back room activity with a couple of guys wearing pocket protectors involved in, and now you essentially can't even run a business if technology isn't involved." A few months after he said this on our show, he went on to take Dell private, a move that's allowed them to go deep into bleeding edge technology moves like Bitcoin and 3D printing. Dells moves in 3D printing have forced competitors to get serious about the business as well (like HP). We might be at the knee of the curve here; Dell's acceptance of Bitcoin just might push other major enterprise players to start thinking about Bitcoin in the same way.
Since Dell adopted bitcoin as a payment method, I have not seen them publish any sales figures, stating how successfull, their entry into this market was. I have been searching and asking in other forums, and I have been looking on most of the bigger crypto currency related webpages, but cannot seem to find anything. Did I miss it somehow, or was this never published?
